Though we’ve still got another 4 weeks of Summer movies, there’s really one more that interests me before hanging my hat — er getting my hat preparing for fall. And it’s the new Bourne series with Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz.

Synopsis:

The fourth installment of the highly successful Bourne series sees the return of the franchise’s screenwriter, Tony Gilroy, this time stepping into the director’s seat for an entry which sidelines main character Jason Bourne in order to focus on a fellow estranged assassin (Jeremy Renner). Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz co-star, with Joan Allen and Albert Finney reprising their roles from the previous films.

And seeing that I know how the readers loves the freebies from movie studios, I have 10 VIP seats to giveaway for a special ATL movie screening to the highly anticipated action flick. How you ask? Read below.

In support of its upcoming film The Bourne Legacy, Universal Pictures has launched “Operation Intel,” it was announced today. Movie Scoop: #ThinkLikeAMan Scores BIG w/ 33.3 Million, Comes Under Fire For Homophobic Tone!

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Thanks to the efforts of social media, a prominent promo blitz and an overall fantastic film, Rain Forrest Films, along with Screen Gems and Sony Pictures, “Think Like A Man,” is number-one at the box office.

Nikkie Finke of Deadline Hollywood
breaks down how this “urban comedy” roped in an impressive 33.3 million:

I’m amused how everybody is getting in line now to tell me all the execs and talent responsible for the huge success of this movie. But, first, let’s not forget that Jeff Blake’s ace marketing and distribution team can sell virtually anything. And no doubt Clint Culpepper is on a hot streak: this is Screen Gems’ third #1 film of the year, and Sony Pictures’ fourth #1 in 2012. Besides Harvey, comedian Kevin Hart deserve credit for turning out his rabid fanbase by endlessly promoting the pic and dominating the social media conversation about it. Hart is still a fairly fresh film star: his 2011 standup comedy film Laugh At My Pain shocked the industry by making Top 10 numbers despite playing in very few theaters. Harvey’s and Hart’s and the cast’s popularity allowed Sony to take advantage of some 40+M social connections on Facebook and Twitter. And then there’s Tim Story (Barbershop, Fantastic Four 1 and 2) who directed the film. “How many prominent African American film comedy directors are there after all who have helmed a mainstream breakout hit?” one insider gushed to me. Besides Harvey, screenwriting credit went to David A. Newman and Keith Merryman, while producer credit went to William Hacker.

Definiely an impressive accomplishment. I got an advanced screening of the film and I loved every second of it. But it seems the films homosexual insensitivity, or at least that’s the charge of some angry gays, is starting to grow legs and get the attention of blogs.

Per Gawker:

The only explicitly homo dude we ever see is in a pink polo, swishing his shoulders as he attempts to fight women shoppers from grabbing the book he’s about to buy (“For me!” he says with several S’s). Gayness is otherwise relegated to the taboo: the group of six men the film follows routinely freak out when they are in the presence of a shirtless or under-dressed buddy (this mild gay panic ensues in kitchens and locker rooms). Sentiments like violin-playing proving that one’s son is gay and that one must qualify his Oprah-watching with, “No homo,” are expressed. A guy buying a book for his mother’s book club is deemed “kinda gay” by a female character, and after dazzling a pretty woman (played by Kelly Rowland) at a bar, Romany Malco’s character, Zeke, tells her confusingly, “I’m gonna walk away like a fairy now.” Um, bye.

This isn’t surprising for a few reasons. The film’s source material, after all, has an extremely limited view of gay men. Harvey advises women:

“…You need a gay guy-someone you can go shopping with, who doesn’t want anything from you but gossip and details about what the old man bought you, which errands you sent the ugly guy to take care of, and exactly how Mandingo had you doing monkey flips for a week. See, the gay guy gives you all the conversation you need (smile).”

In looking back I can see how some could be offended by the overall insensitive and emasculating tone the film set addressing anything remotely homosexual. Not all gay guys are wrist-flicking fairies. And we all know this by now, so that’s a little disappointing in hindsight. But, funny is funny. And comedy almost always offends somebody.

Let’s all just pray that damn GLAAD doesn’t focus in on this.

Movie Scoop: @SethMacFarlane, Brings A Drinking, Smoking, Swearing Teddy Bear To Life in Summer Comedy [Video]!

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

From breezing through white trash names like Britney, Heather, Tammi, Tiffany, etc, to smoking a bong, Seth MacFarlane’s new comedy “Ted” is by far looking like the best film of the summer! You guys know I’m not big on giving big budget Hollywood movies free promotion, but this is hands down the best trailer I think I have ever seen.

Synopsis:

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane brings his boundary-pushing brand of humor to the big screen for the first time as writer, director and voice star of Ted. In the live action/CG-animated comedy, he tells the story of John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a grown man who must deal with the cherished teddy bear who came to life as the result of a childhood wish…and has refused to leave his side ever since.

While I’m not big on Summer releases like I was before life and responsibility showed its ugly head, I am front and center for this one. And I’m gonna pull every string I can to see about getting into this press junket. Fuggin Awesome!

Movie Scoop: @PatrikIanPolk Readies Atlanta Premiere of New Film “The Skinny”

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Critically acclaimed  Director and Producer, Patrik Ian Polk returns with his highly anticipated new project, in some circles, called “The Skinny.” And it’s coming to Atlanta April 6th for a limited release.

Synopsis:

The Skinny, a sharply scripted comedy about a group of four young, black, gay men, Magnus, Sebastian, Kyle and Joey (Jussie Smollett, Blake Young-Fountain, Anthony Burrell and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) and their lesbian best friend Langston (Shanika Warren-Markland). They arrange to meet up in New York City one year after their graduation from Brown University. Their plans for a weekend of fun start off well, and they are relaxed in each other’s company, as only old friends can be. But old tensions quickly resurface—drink, drugs, hidden desire and the demands of promiscuity put friendship, trust and even lives at risk. In between sharp one-liners and a great soundtrack, there are a few important lessons that these pleasure-seekers must learn for themselves. Written with a real sense of the demands of urban living, these bright and believable characters will remind you of someone you know.

While gay films are typically disappointing to me, and only because I feel they reinforce negative stereotypes of gay men in an indirect way (at least for me – I’ve yet to see a gay man like myself or any of my friends portrayed on film. #justsayin), I’ve always enjoyed Polk’s cinematic work. Although I am anxious to see “The Skinny,” some of my readers have emailed me criticizing my lack of support of African-American gay films. It seems with the likes of Blogger B.Scoot, Wilson Cruz, Darryl Stephens and many more in this film, fans are expecting for this movie to be something special. And are demanding my support. So I figured, “what the hell!”

I have no problem supporting anything that fits within the realm of what Gyantunplugged.com represents. Sometimes the content just doesn’t fit. It’s nothing personal. But I do realize my responsibility, thus this post should reflect it. Put down your pitchforks people.

Checkout the sizzling trailer for “The Skinny” above. And be sure to go HERE to find out when, “The Skinny,” comes to a city near you. Official site Here

Movie Sccop: Wrath of Titans ATL Movie Screening!

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Konsole Kingz held an exclusive screening of Wrath of the Titan’s in Atlanta earlier this week. The event was chock full of ATL celebs. I didn’t go because I had a conflict with my schedule, but I definitely got some pics, and a brief synopsis, below.

Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson star once again as gods at war in “Wrath of the Titans,” under the direction of Jonathan Liebesman. A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Worthington) —the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson)—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.

Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers

Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.

Kenny Burns.

Wratch of Titans in theaters TODAY.

Outrage: @ActorBrianWhite On Black People In Movies & On TV, “You Can’t Call It a Stereotype If It’s The Majority..”

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Hollywood actor Brian White is the news today. But it’s not for his new movie with Michelle Williams called, “What My Husband Doesn’t Know.” It’s over his take on black women, Tyler Perry, reality shows and NeNe Leakes.

Though the popularity of reality TV is definitely a controversial one, it seems White has some strong opinions on black people — particularly black women– that’s quite jarring to say the least:

What is your insight on the Spike Lee vs. Tyler Perry beef? Why do you think people hate Tyler Perry so much?

Because Tyler holds a mirror up to people. Stereotypes are not stereotypes today. The most popular character [in, Why Did I Get Married?], and it’s not the one that Tyler picked as the most popular, is Tasha! You have Janet Jackson and Jill Scott; my point is Jill Scott and Janet are huge music stars with huge fan bases, Tasha became the most popular because her character is portrayed the most like “Love & Hip Hop” the most like, “Desperate Housewives of Atlanta,” [we think he means "Housewives Of Atlanta] you might as well switch it around and pop in Nene [Leaks]. [Tasha Smith] is brilliant, she’s nothing like the character, she’s just portraying what she sees in society, magnified.[sic]

And people get mad and say that’s not us. Yes it is, turn on “Love & Hip Hop” and turn on “Desperate Housewives Of Atlanta” those are “reality shows.” You can’t call something reality then get mad when it shows up in the movies as reality but that’s what we’re doing. That’s where the cycle continues. They don’t do that in Africa, they don’t do that in France; they don’t connect with that message. What’s interesting is we, here, in America connect with that message and get upset at it. That’s what Tyler sees. If you look at Spike, what is his most successful movie ever? successful defined by how much money it made versus how much it cost to make. “Inside Man” and the stars were Clive Owens, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Denzel Washington and Jodi Foster… Four huge actors, two white, one known–Denzel and then another amazing British actor people don’t know here. That is not the type of film that Spike necessarily wants to focus on, right? So what makes money isn’t what Spike makes, so it’s upsetting and frustrating–I would assume. But, what Tyler makes, does make money…$500 million worth of money. [sic]

Do you think Tyler Perry only depicts black people in a negative light?

There are a lot of black people who fit into the stereotype but there are a lot of black people who don’t. You can’t call it a stereotype if it’s the majority. The most prevalent image in “urban society” right now is women like Nene [Leaks]. If there’s a fight that breaks out on “Love & Hip Hop” those people are one every blog, the cover of every magazine the next week. It’s not Taraji or Gabrielle, it’s whoever just got into a fist fight. Tyler’s not stereotyping, he’s holding up a mirror and people are mad at him because people don’t want to look at that image in that way.[sic]

When we use the term here in America, and say “black movies,” that has no reference for the rest of the world. Look at “Luther,” Idris just won a Golden Globe for “Luther,” that is NOT a black show, it’s a British show. British don’t see color they see quality. People who watch BBC don’t go, ‘oo’ there’s that black show, nah. Most African Americans were not even aware of Luther because it’s not a stereotypically urban themed show. Once we in America start focusing on quality first and telling human stories that connect with everybody that might want to watch it, the problems will solve themselves.[sic]

Do you believe that the stereotypes we see on TV are prevalent in the race or just portrayed on TV? Is it really the majority of black women that act like Nene?

I have five sisters and two moms, none of them are like that! To me, I can say I’m offended if they want to represent that and don’t want to represent my mom, but my mom represents Phylicia Rashād and has been represented on TV all my life. I can’t say that. I don’t watch “Real Housewives,” I’ve never seen an episode of “Love & Hop Hop” I’m not supporting it, I’m not giving it ratings. I’m not making the stereotype exist on TV. You’ve watched it, you’ve added to why it’s on TV.[sic] [Read More]

I don’t know what White is talking about! While I don’t watch reality TV either, nor have I seen an episode of “Love & Hip-Hop,” I know that women depicted in these types of shows don’t represent the women who are in my life.

Not to go in on the acting homie, but his take is on this matter is all wrong. And to think I loved him in “The Family Stone.” smh.

Movie Plug: @Classic_Cannon Brings The Cast of “Osiris” To Atlanta!

Friday, November 4th, 2011

You all know I’m not big on giving shine to movie projects. The main reason is due to the fact that most productions have marketing and advertising budgets that tend to overlook urban media. However, the new web-series, Osiris, gets a pass. Maybe its because my homegirl Cannon Kent — an phenomenonal woman — is at the helm of getting the word out about this project.

Last night in Atlanta, Cannon hosted an exclusive VIP affair to meet the cast of the world wide web focused series. I had every intention on attending this event. Most notably due to my crush on leading actor Brad James. But it seems Mother nature had other plans and I was forced to miss out. But that didnt stop the party by any means and I hear it was nothing short of a success.

Synopsis:
The Web Series is a new 10-episode action-thriller Internet Television series filmed in the diverse backdrop of Atlanta featuring gritty crime fiction, espionage, science fiction and the supernatural. Each episode is 5-8 minutes long and features a jaw dropping cliffhanger! In the vein of classic shows like True Blood, Lost and 24, “Osiris” will be addictive television for the web!

The series follows the title character “Osiris”, a man with an eternally extended warranty on life. He can never stay dead. If killed, he resurrects in EXACTLY 37 minutes, every time.

As the series begins, Osiris has only 24 hours to track down a kidnapped witness in a federal murder trial. His dangerous hunt not only unravels a conspiracy but it also unveils clues to the true nature of his eternal life.

Checkout the trailer above and make it your business to get on this groundbreaking series.

Special shout-out to Cannon Kent for a job well done. I would have never known about this series above without you. And of course I thank you for the introduction to Brad James. Homer Simpson growl.
