Industry Bit: Adele’s 21 On Pace To Become Bigger Success Than “The Bodyguard SDTK”

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

It looks like UK songstress Adele has plenty to be happy about. Not only has she collected accolades for having one of the best albums in quite sometime, she’s also now in the same speaking breathe as Whitney Houston.

Per Billboard:

And this week is no different, as her “21″ album hits its 17th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (95,000; down 9%). “21″ has been No. 1 longer than any other album since “The Bodyguard” soundtrack wrapped a 20-week run at No. 1 on the chart dated May 29, 1993.

Could Adele do it? Only time will tell. But man what a comeback.

Industry Bit: Jay-Z & @KanyeWest New Business Model Preventing Leaks Gain Attention, #WTT To Sell 600k?

Monday, August 15th, 2011

The music industry and beyond continues to marvel at hip-hop leaders Kanye West and Jay-Z. With “Watch The Throne,” clocking in at #1 in 22 countries without one reported leak it seems a new method is about to be adopted within the music industry in hopes of easing tension between artists and web-savvy consumers impatience to get their hands on the finished product.

Hits Daily Doubles reports:

To minimize the chance of leaks, the physical album didn’t ship to retail until Monday morning for Friday’s physical release, hours after the album became available as an iTunes exclusive as of 12:01 ET. The gambit worked, as the first leak appeared on Pirate Bay and other file-sharing sites only after iTunes started selling it.

While it’s impossible to quantify the strategy in terms of hard numbers, the absence of early leaks is virtually unprecedented for a high-profile release and has to be considered a rousing success. At presstime, first-week sales estimates were well above 500k for the unconventional staggered release, which includes the added wrinkle of a Best Buy exclusive on the deluxe version.

Will it hit 600k? And given all the positives in play, will this concept become the new model for superstar releases? That would be much to the displeasure of brick & mortar, who feel hosed by the tactic…

What Kanye and jay did was nothing short of brilliant. The old conversation that leaks actually lead to more album sales then less might have to be revisited now. Either way what an accomplishment.

Industry Bit: @S_C Back In The Lab Recording Follow-Up To “BluePrint 3″

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

While all the Jay-Z & Kanye West fans were disappointed that the highly anticipated new collaboration failed to hit stores with a rumored 4th of July release, it seems there’s good news for all the Jay-Z supporters.

It seems while recording “Watch The Throne” with his protege Ye’, the experience got the leader of hip-hop’s musical pallets moistened to start recording on what will be his 12th solo CD.

He says:

“I know exactly the tone and the whole feel of the album. I think when you experience creativity, you should get it out as much as possible.”

Looks like it’s going to be a busy third and fourth quarter, huh?

On Blast: Disgruntled Bloggers Talk Disastrous Accounting w/ @GlobalGrind, “They Owe Me 4 Mo Worth of Checks!”

Monday, June 27th, 2011

All last week I received three emails from three prominent blog sites expressing anger and frustration over Global Grinds advertising program and their failure to pay timely on services rendered. The Russell Simmons owned digital media company that promotes the alleged, “broadest and deepest array of content of interest to the hip-hop community,” has apparently defaulted on their invoicing process.

“Global Grind hasn’t paid me since January 2011” echoes the frustration of one Atlanta top blog site. “Several emails and phones calls to company accountant Deeta have gone simply unanswered. I have my own company overhead. I have responsibilities and employees to pay, and it doesn’t help when such a large site utilizes my website real estate and simply ignores or avoids all avenues to make payment”

While the details surrounding the unexplained payment defaults remains unanswered, a close source to the company essentially alluded to allegations of faulty accounting. “The system is screwed up,” says my source. “When money comes into the company rather then pay blogger invoices, it goes to the companies overhead first. And if anything is left over the blog sites receive checks.”

Though Gyantunplugged.com can NOT substantiate any claims made about the accounting practices of the hip-hop “Huffington Post,” the fact that so many disgruntled blog owners have reached out to us expressing outrage clearly paints a picture that G.G. is not on the up and up on a very big problem.

From local NYC bloggers threatening physical violence, to one allegedly losing their apartment because of none payment, it’s a wonder how the disastrous accounting problems at G.G. have gone unreported. Source’s close to G.G. explains/breakdown how they are to be paid doing business with Russell’s Global Grind. Apparently every blogger under the advertisement program is to receive monies owed for each 90-day cycle the following month. Jan-Mar  should produce a check by April for the previous 90 days. However, I hear that G.G. has only issued checks — and only to a handful of bloggers at that– for 1 month of January. Seeing as though we are on the cusp of July, you can understand the anger and rage of emotion.

Some prominent bloggers have expressed to Gyantunplugged.com that they’ve gone unpaid for up to 4 ½ months.

This is one of the biggest reasons why I removed all urban ad networks from my site with the new upgrade that took place months ago. I would much rather sell my own advertisements and use my brand of “truth telling,” to keep everything on the up and up as far as getting paid, and on time. Unfortunately I have had nothing but negative experiences from certain..OK hell..All black owned ad networks.

What I don’t understand, is why Russell would allow his “progressive” reputation to get caught up in such nonsense. Reminds me of the contradiction I observe every-time I see a “Rush Card” commercial.

Pay your blogs on time or get out of the advertisement business all together.

Industry Bit: WMG’s Lyor Cohen Defends 360 Deals Amongst Rumors of Massive Losses & A Quick Sale!

Monday, June 13th, 2011

If you all didn’t know I am the ATL correspondent as well as the blogger on their “Opinion Page.” I will be offering up my opinion on various music industry topics daily for you all to enjoy.

Due to BET.com’s website being so difficult to navigate a lot of people have called me up asking where they can find my work. Here’s a little bit of what I had to say regarding WMG’S Lyor Cohen and his defense of 360º.

Lyor Cohen Weighs the Positives of 360 Deals

The respected record exec points out the advantages of the exclusive deals

Lyor Cohen

While many of you may not be aware, living in the music hub of our great nation for hip hop, ATL, I’m privileged to have very direct communication with the industry elite. The biggest misconception most have about the music industry is its success. While blinding bulbs burn bright on the stage, in many cases the stress of dipping profit margins are the reality behind the scenes. Once a well-oiled machine, the music industry is experiencing turbulent times in an ever evolving digital space.

With the success of acts like Lady Gaga and her massive music score last week claiming the number one spot on the Billboard charts with over a million copies of her new CD Born This Way, it is easy to think that the music industry is still thriving. But in reality for many the music game is in shambles, particularly in hip hop. Now a staple in the music game, 360º deals have become a method for struggling record labels to ensure they maximize the profit on their artists. Rather than make money on the artist via record sales, labels are getting paid via the artist marketing dollars and shows. Responsibilities that once went to an artist’s manager belong to the label which gets a percentage of the profit. Is a 360° deal a successful strategy? Well Lyor Cohen, head of Warner Music Group, seems to think so.

In a recent sit down with Forbes magazine, Lyor discussed the evolution of the music scene post the CD era, his excitement for the future and also his feelings on those executive lavish lifestyles. Let’s visit a bit of what he had to say, and then we’ll move on:

Forbes: In terms of artists you know, how do you see the role of the 360º the multiple rights deal having an impact going forward?

Lyor: Well it’s really important for us because we are, you know, these labels are about people. And to get the very finest, the most seasoned, the most creative, thoughtful, transformative people you have to pay them. And I wouldn’t be able to have the quality of the individual that populate these companies without having additional rights.

Forbes: What do you say to critics who say that the 360° deal is putting all your eggs in one basket if you’re an artist?

Lyor: I don’t listen to critics. We’re drumming by our own drum. And 360’s are very important for artists. They should look at it as a net positive. The fact of the matter is that we are also walking the walk and not just talking the talk.
That’s an interesting and very honest take. While many of you may not know, it’s being reported that WMG has lost over—are you sitting down?—an estimated 10 billion dollars over the past 10 years. WMG just recently secured a deal with billionaire Len Blavatnik to purchase Warner for $3.3 billion a purchase rumored to be sparked by WMG’s financial problems. [Read More Here]

The Machine: New Promo For Beyonce’s New Album Takes A Leak!

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Columbia Records is gearing up for the world’s top female Pop Star Beyonce’s new single with a strategic social media campaign.

I’m sure by now you’ve already seen pictures from the set of Beyonce’s highly anticipated music video. And yesterday I heard a small snippet of her new single “Girls (That Rule The World)” [we dont post snippets on GU.com, but you can listen to it here]

Above is a brand new promotional shot for her new CD that is rumored to be EPIC. Why nobody admits that though Beyonce’s singles are typically catchy and chart dominating, her actual albums are “Eh” as best. It’s never a cohesive collection. I’ve learned to just listen to Bey’s singles and skip the overall album.

Beyonce’s new single is expected to impact radio sometime next week. Or so I hear.

Album Sales Scoop: @RealWizKhalifa Debut Album Sales 6K Copies??

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

It seems like only yesterday that the world was chanting “Black & Yellow” throughout sports arenas and night clubs across this country. And it seems people wish to keep it just that — a memory.

According to HitsDailyDouble.com, [yes take the results up with them] Wiz debut album won’t have the cannon-ball-effect on this weeks album charts. In fact you can’t even call it a splash as “Rolling Papers” is expected to sell a meager 6k copies. True the results won’t be officially made available until Wednesday, but I don’t see those numbers fairing MUCH better.

Whiz got pummeled by acts like Britney Spears, who of course is #1 this week with her “comeback” project “Femme Fetale,” Kirk Franklin and more. Hell even E40 beat Wiz.

It’s definitely not a career-ender, but it definitely makes you give him the side-eye. And I’m sure the head honcho’s over at Atlantic are doing the exact same thing.

Could the new “Snoop” in the game be nothing more then a one hit wonder? Only time will tell. But I can tell you this; Somebody’s rolling some papers at Atlantic Records over their tentative pink slip.

Lets see how long Amber Rose sticks around now.

Industry Bit: @ChrisBrown Will Have The #1 Album In The Country Next Week!

Friday, March 25th, 2011

As they always say, “There’s no such thing as bad press!” And the phrase couldn’t be more true for Chris Brown’s new project F.A.M.E. According to early estimates the controversial star will clock in at #1 on billboard next week with sales expected to top 275k.

Arista/RMG’s Jennifer Hudson sophomore album, I Remember Me, bows this week with 150-175k in sales, which is about what she dropped in weight.

Not too shabby. Clearly CB’s attitude wont change now that I’m sure he will interpret this as the people wanting the bad boy Brown. I cant even waste mental space on this. Congrats to all.

It Looks Like Nobody Cares To Hear DeAndre’s Way, Soulja Boy’s New Album Flops!

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Could the love affair between Soulja Boy and Hip-Hop be over? That’s what some are speculating now that his new album “The De Andre Way” failed to generate adequate CD sales.

Per XXL:

Soulja Boy Tell’em debuted on The Billboard 200 sales chart this week, with his third album The DeAndre Way, but the Swag rapper failed to sell as many copies as expected.

Moving close to 13, 400 units in his first week, SB didn’t make a lot of noise on the Nielsen SoundScan report, released today (December 8). In comparison, Soulja’s last disc, 2008’s iSouljaboytellem, sold about 45,500 copies in week one.

I’ve never been a fan. So for me its about damn time we move on.
