Though I don’t normally spend my time reporting on the mundane, there’s an artist out of South Carolina who’s story is quite compelling.
Charlamagne Tha God’s hateful artist Lil Ru is quite the cautionary tales for new artists. Especially since the debut of his album has come and gone with little to no fanfare.
It seems South Carolina had the opportunity to finally put itself on the musical map with the rise of the Stupid Dope Move’s artist. But true music-industry fashion, somebody has gone delusional and effed up the situation.
In March it was announced that Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Frosty had secured a record deal for their star artist Lil Rue to join the once leading hip-hop record label Def Jam. Of course there’s a history with Capitol, but in the interest of saving time there’s really no point in talking about it. The press released herald the landmark deal as a major victory for the hip-hop scene of South Crack to become firmly established. However, it seems inner bickering and the notorious industry, “I Said, They Said” has destroyed the chances of Lil Rue from ever becoming a star.
Now the word on the street is that before the ink could dry on the contract, the stumpy southern MC started to shift camps from Team Stupid Dope Moves to Team Def Jam. In a stupid -yet none dope move – Lil Rue committed a industry sin by turning on the team that got him to his meager musical situation. Though I don’t know exactly who said what first, Ru went on radio claiming himself as the main and only reason for his record deal. Furious, and rightfully so Charlamagne Tha God posted a direct twitter message voicing his strong opinions against Ru’s disloyal ways.
Fast forwarding through all the mellow-dramatic accounts, Ru’s hit record “Nasty Song” has come and gone. His debut album, ‘21 & Up’ was released last week through the fleeting record label powerhouse without a whisper of a thrill. And there’s even talk that Ru is in fear of returning to his home state because a serious beatdown awaits.
There’s little to no hope that Ru will recover from his downward spiral of stardom, but the lesson should be quite clear. New artists, make sure you take the time to forge strong and unbreakable relationships with your team. Go into a label having a firm foundation of self, and trusting the people you put in place to look out for you.
Don’t end up like Lil Ru.
And South Carolina shouldn’t trip because there’s still hope that another MC on the come up can take SC where it needs to go. And his name is Jus Nice. Yea I said it!
