Is Def Jam against hiring people with college degrees these days?

When DJ made Jermaine Dupri Executive Vice President of Urban, many of us scratched our heads completely dubious as to how the lil’ munchkin landed the highly coveted position. And now in a more dubious move Def Jam has now offered another artist an executive gig. And this time its singer-songwriter Dream aka Terius Hagert Youngdell Nash. WTF?

Dream announed on his twitter page hours ago that he’s officially the Executive Vice President of the once leading hip-hop label.

The official announcement:

I wanna Thank everyone at Island Records/Def Jam for their faith in me and making me Executive Vice President of Island Records. Thank you to my team. my manager Mark Stewart & my attorney Aaron Rosenberg for getting this 1st step of a goal accomplished. Thanks to Judy. Thank you to my partner Tricky Stewart and the RadioKilla & RedZone Staff. LA Reid, Karen Kwak, Steve Bartels, Joe Barino Steve Gotlieb and Thank you, Universal Chairman, Doug Morris.

I look forward to the challenge of rebuilding music for not only Island Records, But for Universal Records as a whole. Today I’m humbled and blessed. Oh yeah thank you Christina for your wonderful belief in me i love you! also i want to thank the entire Nash family and Milian family for the Super Support you Give! This doesn’t mean i have extra money it means i have extra bills [Source]

I’m sorry, but I’m going to need to see a degree and a job application before I’m convinced that this is the right move. Plus, isn’t it a conflict of interest to have an artist acting as a VP of a label? If I were an artist on the Def Jam I would be side eyeing EVERYBODY with this move.

I mean there’s no denying Terius can write a hit record, but can he right a business plan, or hell even an office memo?

Only time will tell if this was good decision. Congrats to Dream – let’s see what he can do.

Gyant, outside of LA & Babyface, have there really been any successful musicians-turned-execs?? And I’m not being facetious, I really want to know. It wasn’t a big shock when JD was named a VP b/c he had led a successful label for years. (I know SSD was on the decline by that point, but he still did a good job of building the SSD empire.) But as for most of the others, I have scratched my head. How can these folks successfully bring in new artists, cultivate them, keep old artists evolving, handle all the business odds & ends if they themselves are trying to be in the studio and tour for their own album. It just doesn’t seem to be a successful formula.
