Every since Trey Songz has become the new Chris Brown, I’ve been saying that CB the original deserves a box of condoms at the very least from Trey. I mean lets ALL keep it real; Nobody was checking for Mr. Songz before Chris went Ike on Rihanna. So you can imagine my surprise when BET’s soundoff blog basically confirmed my opinions with a new blog entry titled –Did Trey Songz Benefit From Chris Brown’s Weak Sales?
It’s hard to compare numbers with sales steadily worsening year after year, but Trey and C. Breezy have essentially traded places. Breezy achieved instant commercial success with his self-titled debut and sophomore LP both selling 2 million units. At his peak, he was endorsing doublemint gum, making appearances on the then popular The O.C. TV series, starring in motion pictures (Stomp the Yard & This Christmas) and dating one of the hottest pop stars on the globe, Rihanna. Meanwhile, Trey had more of a sluggish start. Despite putting out good music and establishing himself as one of rap’s most sought after hook men, a tried and true way to expand a fan base, his first two releases fell short of a gold plaque. In fact, Trey’s commercial shortcomings were always a bit of an enigma. After all, as previously mentioned, he always seemed to hold the right recipe for stardom: the looks, the voice and the music. Still, his 2005 debut, I Gotta Make It, only sold 350, 000 CDs while Trey Day moved 400, 000 units.
What a difference two years make. Well, 10 months for Brown. Though the general consensus agrees that he still got it, Chris’ third album, Graffiti, has only sold 295, 421 copies to date. Meanwhile, Trey’s fittingly titled, Ready, has sold 611, 500 copies and could realistically go platinum by year’s end. Nowadays, Trey’s surfing the airwaves with singles like “I Invented Sex,” “Say Ahh” and “Neighbors Know My Name” while Chris is begging his fans to call radio stations because they aren’t playing his music. Trey’s touring arenas on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour and Breezy’s having a hard time selling tickets. Though Trey hit stores three months before Chris, Ready is still going strong while Graffiti appears to have lost steam. Ready currently ranks at no. 24 on the Billboard 200, Graffiti’s nowhere to be found. Trey currently has three singles on the R&B chart, “Neighbors Know My Name” at no. 5, “Say Ahh” at no. 9, also no. 13 on the pop chart, and “I Invented Sex ” at no. 23. I’m not saying Trey couldn’t have struck gold without Brown moving underwhelming numbers. But maybe we were so busy saying aah that “Transform Ya” and “Crawl” fell on deaf ears. Sure, the comparison’s somewhat uneven, but Chris Brown was undoubtedly the hottest young R&B male in early 2009. Who’s the hottest young R&B male right now? Trey Songz. If you ask me, the two have traded places.
Hell yea they’ve traded places. Trey’s on cloud 9 right now with a hit album, a successful tour and even his own MTV Unplugged show, which I believe will be recorded this coming Friday.
This just goes to show you that you never know whats in the cards for your life. Let’s just all pray that Trey doesn’t going oops up somebodies head and become a musical leper like CB. Lets also hope Trey doesn’t forget the bloggers who held him down back when nobody cared and will return a brutha’s phone call for an interview on GUTV. #imjustsayin
