Guest Blogger K.I.M.: I’m Him Only Better

Everyone knows there is nothing new under the sun so how can new artists really be expected to come out with something “NEW”?

I don’t think it’s possible and I think it’s a waste of time for someone to try. There is a root to everything so a person will never be credited with being the “originator”, instead people will dissect it and say they got this from here and that from there and so on.

My advice to people hoping to break into the music industry is this… find you 1 artist you like or want to be, study their style and everything they do and COPY IT.

HOLD UP, before yall attack, hear me out. My rationalization is this: you will never be able to copy anyone or thing exactly, parts of “you” will always show through. Now back to the copying, copy the person you like the most and add something to it. There is nothing wrong with flipping (adding to) someone else’s plan, in fact you’d be rather dumb not to. When they created the wheel why would you waste time trying to make it over, why not make it BETTER, if you can. “If you can” being the operative statement here, cus’ if you can’t, then leave mofo’s sh*t alone, there’s nothing worse than somebody f*cking up some good shit, but if you improve on it, you will always be remembered.

Example: Redman and Ludacris

If you look at Reggie and Chris you can’t help but to see the similarities. Personally I think both of those mofo’s could be cartoon characters, they just got these funny ass looks about them. Now for the rap styles…. they BOTH got crazy flows and can switch up, lyrical, real MC’s and all that. With Chris being a Virgo I don’t doubt that he studied and mastered everything Redman did (I’m a Virgo too, that’s what we do research and perfect sh*t, it’s just one of our traits). Knowing that Chris used to work at the radio station, etc. I see exactly what he did and I commend him on it. He copied Redman 1.0 and created and released Luda 4.5. Now Chris is all over the place doing movies and everything and I think we can all agree that he surpassed Redman and aint nothing wrong with it. And this isn’t a diss to Redman cus’ that’s my friend & I LOVE Reggie but it’s the truth!

Moral of this post: You can’t recreate the wheel but you can improve on the design. All you artists all over the place, instead of trying to be the new R.KellyUsherAaronHallJoeDonnelJonesMaxwellJaheimDaveHollisterAthonyHamiltonDeangelo mofo all wrapped in one; pick 1 person that popped that’s the closest to your style, improve on what they did and do you.

I was wondering where you were going when I first started reading, but you make a lot of sense and I agree. Let’s be honest, everyone who comes out saying they’re doing it like nobody else always ends up looking like a knock-off of [fill in the blank]. Perhaps if more people were just honest from the jump that they’re trying to be the next whoever, then they may actually do that. Look at Tyra. She has made it clear that she wants to be the next Oprah and she has patterned her post-catwalk career after Oprah. Much as Tyra & her big forehead get on my nerves, I have to give her props on doing her thing.
